“THE DUCHESS OF PLAKENDIA”

The popular actress Maria Kitsou stars in the new production by Yorgos Nanouris, “The Duchess of Plakendia”, hosted at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at 19:00.

Yorgos Nanouris oversees the entire production and is an actor and director renowned for his remarkable and innovative directorial skills. The play tells the extraordinary life story of Sophia de Marbois, known as the Duchess of Plakendia - a woman whose residence is now a museum, and whose name has been given to a major avenue and a metro station in Athens. She was immensely wealthy, independent, and dynamic, and is remembered as one of Greece’s great benefactors, having financially supported the country after the 1821 Revolution.

The story highlights the personal tragedy of a mother who could not bear the loss of her daughter and found a paradoxical way to remain with her forever. A tale that walks the line between fiction and reality, it intertwines legends and truths about her relationships with iconic figures, as well as the eccentricities of her extraordinary life.
