The Nicosia International Festival 2025 and the Organisation for Positive Urbanism (OPU) present the first Bicycle Film Festival, on Sunday, 19 October 2025, as part of the Festival’s Parallel Programme.
OPU is a non-profit organisation based in Nicosia, formed by a group of young people working with the goal of making Nicosia more friendly to pedestrians and cyclists. It focuses on awareness campaigns related to urban space, which include the dissemination of information, tactical urban design interventions, workshops, as well as social and cultural events.
About the Bicycle Film Festival
The Bicycle Film Festival has been organised in New York for 25 years. It is an international phenomenon that began with Brendt Barbur in New York, after he was hit by a bus while riding his bicycle. This unfortunate event inspired him to create an international institution which celebrates the bicycle through cinema, music, and art.
Today, the festival is a benchmark for art and culture that promotes sustainability, having traveled to more than 100 cities worldwide and attracted over 1 million viewers.
What is included
The Bicycle Film Festival aims to inspire people of all ages to view the bicycle as a tool for sustainability, health, and freedom. Through a multidimensional programme, it brings together art, storytelling, culture, and mental and physical well-being, all revolving around a common denominator: the bicycle.
It is an all-day event, including short film screenings that will take place at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre, as well as various activities that will be held in the Nicosia Municipal Garden.
The film screenings focus on the theme of inclusion and equality, embracing diversity in all its forms - age, gender, religion, or sexual orientation.
The total screening duration will be one hour, followed by a discussion session. The programme will include:
